What to know

  • Keep city demand and suburban coverage visible separately.
  • Use CTA lines and the seven-county region to define a realistic catchment.
  • Plan Chicago budgets around winter demand swings, not an even monthly spend.
  • Ask whether pages or ads in Spanish, Polish or other languages fit your customers.
  • Check that roofing ads show the Illinois license number and licensee name.

Define the local problem before requesting proposals.

Chicago designates 77 community areas in its municipal code.

Compare proposals using one actual service area and one supported project type. Ask the provider to explain when a community-area page would contain useful information and when it would duplicate the main service page.

Keep city demand and suburban coverage visible separately.

Imagine a commercial cleaning company serving a defined group of properties in Chicago. An inquiry for a large ongoing contract may justify different travel from a small one-time job. The acquisition plan should explain property types and engagement scope, then keep service-area performance visible. A citywide traffic total cannot show whether either type of work fits the operation.

Start with the business's real service boundaries and distinguish city customers from suburban customers. Community areas are useful reference points, not automatic instructions to create 77 pages. For dental campaigns, compare inquiry quality by clinic catchment; for HVAC campaigns, compare service areas against dispatch capacity.

Provider services and questions to ask
ProviderWhat its website describesQuestion for your proposal
Orbit MediaEmphasizes website design, development, content strategy, SEO and conversion optimization, with website migration included in its service descriptions.Ask which existing pages and search traffic the redesign will preserve, and who owns the migration checklist.
Be Found OnlineLists SEO, paid media, content and analytics, including technical SEO, website migrations and custom reporting.Ask to see how the report connects campaign activity with your actual sales or intake stages.

For a Chicago business, decide whether the immediate problem is the website itself or the way existing demand is acquired and measured. A redesign proposal and an ongoing media program should not be judged as interchangeable packages.

Chicago catchments follow transit lines and suburban borders.

According to CTA's published facts, the agency runs eight rail lines with 146 stations and 127 bus routes, serving the City of Chicago and 35 suburbs. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning describes its region as seven counties, 284 municipalities and 8.6 million residents of northeastern Illinois.

Those figures point to a market where a customer's practical reach often depends on a rail line or a commute corridor as much as on distance. A clinic near a busy station may draw patients from far along that line, while a business a few miles away but off the network may depend on people who drive. Suburban demand also sits across hundreds of separate municipalities that customers name when they search.

Ask each provider how it would draw your first service area. A thoughtful answer distinguishes customers who arrive by transit from those who drive, explains which suburbs are included and why, and avoids treating the whole region as one audience simply because it shares a media market.

Parking also deserves a question. In dense neighborhoods, the ease of parking can decide whether a driving customer books at all, and a page that explains it clearly may answer a concern that otherwise ends the inquiry.

Chicago winters change what customers need and when.

National Weather Service normals for Chicago O'Hare for 1991 to 2020 show average annual snowfall of 38.4 inches, a January average temperature of 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit and a July average of 75.4 degrees. Few large US markets swing so far between seasons.

This suggests that demand for many local services moves in clear waves. Furnace repair, snow removal and frozen pipe calls cluster in cold months, while exterior work, landscaping and some elective appointments may shift toward spring and summer. A campaign that holds the same targets all year can overspend when customers are not searching, or run short when urgent demand arrives.

Ask the provider to sketch how messages, budget and service priorities would change between January and July for your business. Also ask how it would handle a sudden cold snap: who decides to raise or pause spend, how quickly, and what capacity information it needs from your team.

Winter also affects the work itself. Some outdoor jobs cannot be completed in freezing conditions, so marketing that keeps booking them in January may create a backlog or cancellations. A provider that understands the trade should ask which services you can actually deliver in each season before it writes the plan.

Several major languages are spoken across Chicago.

The City of Chicago's language access guidance for the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities explains that departments serve languages spoken by a limited-English population above a set threshold. Currently that means Spanish, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Polish and Arabic.

For a private business, the city's list is not a rule to follow, but it is a useful signal about the communities living in the city. If many of your customers prefer one of these languages, a page or ad written only in English may lose them at the first step. Translated pages also need staff who can respond in that language, or the inquiry may stall after the form.

Ask whether the provider would recommend any non-English pages for your service, how it would decide, and who would write and check them. Machine translation without review can introduce errors in medical, legal or pricing details. A careful proposal ties language work to actual customer demand and your ability to answer in that language.

Search behavior can differ by language as well, with customers using different terms, platforms or review sites. Ask the provider how it would research those differences rather than translating English keywords word for word.

Illinois roofing ads must carry the license number.

Roofing contractors face a specific Illinois requirement. Section 5(d) of the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act, 225 ILCS 335/5, states that a licensee may not advertise roofing services unless the advertisement includes the roofing contractor license number and the licensee's name as it appears on the license. Subsection (a) also requires the number on contracts and bids.

That puts a compliance step into every search ad, landing page, social post and printed piece a roofing company runs. Short ad formats can make this awkward, so the provider needs a process rather than an assumption.

  • Ask who checks the license number and name on each new ad.
  • Ask how short formats will carry the required details.
  • Confirm the name matches the license exactly, not a trading name.

Contracts and bids that come from campaign inquiries need the number too, under subsection (a). If the provider supplies proposal templates, quote forms or automated replies, ask it to include the license details there as well. Note that the act's text states the section is scheduled for repeal on January 1, 2031, so ask who will monitor changes to the law and update your materials if the requirement moves or changes.

Your questions, answered

Who is the best marketing provider in Chicago?

The right choice depends on the service, scope and working arrangement your business needs. Compare evidence, ownership, relevant expertise and the way each provider will measure suitable outcomes. This guide does not present an unverified ranking of agencies.

How can we test whether a provider understands this market?

Compare proposals using one actual service area and one supported project type. Ask the provider to explain when a community-area page would contain useful information and when it would duplicate the main service page.

Should a Chicago business target the suburbs too?

It depends on how customers reach you. CMAP's region covers seven counties and 284 municipalities, and CTA serves the city plus 35 suburbs. Ask the provider to show which suburbs are included and how travel by car or transit supports that choice.

How do Chicago winters affect a marketing plan?

NWS normals for O'Hare show 38.4 inches of snow a year and a January average of 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Many services see strong seasonal swings as a result. Ask how the provider would change budget and messages through the year and respond to sudden cold spells.

Do Illinois roofing ads need a license number?

Yes. 225 ILCS 335/5(d) says a licensee may not advertise roofing services unless the advertisement includes the roofing contractor license number and the licensee's name as it appears on the license. Ask the provider how it will check this in every format.
