What to know

  • Separate local visits from wider regional relationships.
  • Account for water, ferries and tolled crossings when drawing a Seattle service area.
  • Track King County growth separately from the rest of Puget Sound.
  • Match offers and qualification to a high-wage, tech-heavy buyer base.
  • Check that contractor ads show the Washington registration number.

Define the local problem before requesting proposals.

PSRC's regional planning remit covers King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

Ask which customer journey the proposal assumes and how actual attendance or serviceability will be reviewed. An impression from somewhere in the region does not establish a practical local opportunity.

Separate local visits from wider regional relationships.

Imagine a fitness studio with a schedule built around in-person classes. Regional awareness is less useful if interested people cannot attend the actual sessions. Its page should make location, class fit and the introduction process easy to understand. A professional firm serving clients remotely could need a very different geographic plan in the same region.

Define whether the business needs Seattle city visibility or demand from a broader part of the region. County coverage is a different commitment from a Seattle neighborhood catchment. Review real customer origins and appointment or service accessibility before using a broad regional target.

Provider services and questions to ask
ProviderWhat its website describesQuestion for your proposal
Seattle Digital MarketingDescribes an integrated service mix spanning SEO, paid ads, social media, branding and websites in the Seattle area.Ask which channel deserves the first investment for your service and what evidence would change that decision.
Hawker DigitalDescribes SEO, PPC, content strategy and consulting for Seattle-area businesses, with a location listed in Renton.Ask how the campaign separates the city, nearby service areas and inquiries the business cannot fulfil.

A Seattle-area provider can be based outside the city and still understand the market. Compare its explanation of your delivery area, the first channel it recommends and the evidence it will use to review customer fit.

Water and tolled crossings shape realistic Seattle service areas.

Washington State Ferries reports that it was the busiest ferry system in the United States in 2025, with more than 20.1 million riders and a fleet of 21 auto-passenger vessels. WSDOT also lists several tolled facilities in the Seattle area, including the SR 520 bridge, the I-405 express toll lanes, the SR 99 tunnel and the SR 167 express toll lanes.

Straight-line distance can be misleading in this geography. A customer across Lake Washington, on Bainbridge Island or in Kitsap County may be close on a map but separated by a bridge toll, a ferry schedule or a congested corridor. For mobile services, those crossings can affect the cost of a job; for clinics and studios, they can affect whether a customer keeps coming back.

Ask each provider how it would draw your service area and whether it has considered water crossings and tolls. A careful answer uses travel time and customer origin data rather than a radius, and explains how inquiries from across the water would be judged against your capacity and pricing.

Tolls can also change customer behavior at different times of day, so ask whether the provider would review inquiry timing alongside location.

Puget Sound growth is concentrated in King County.

The Puget Sound Regional Council reported that about 4,534,000 people lived in the four-county central Puget Sound region in spring 2025, after growth of about 50,400 residents in a year. King County grew 1.41 percent, the fastest in the region, and Seattle passed 800,000 residents for the first time.

Growth like this suggests that new households, apartments and businesses keep appearing in particular corridors rather than evenly across the region. For local services, that can mean new demand close to existing customers, but also new competitors opening in the same places.

Ask the provider how it would report results for Seattle, the rest of King County and the other three counties separately. A combined regional figure can hide whether growth is coming from areas you can serve efficiently. Also ask how the plan would respond as new neighborhoods fill in, and what evidence would justify extending coverage to Snohomish, Pierce or Kitsap.

Growth also changes competition. New businesses opening in the same corridors may bid on the same searches, which can raise costs over time. Ask how often the provider would review competitors in your area and what it would change if costs rose.

A high-wage tech economy changes the Seattle buyer.

The Washington State Employment Security Department's King County profile reports 1,449,797 covered employees in 2024 with an average wage of $132,276. The information sector, which includes much of the technology industry, had 128,749 jobs with an average wage of $350,208, the highest of any sector. The profile describes strong technology and aerospace manufacturing sectors.

A buyer base like this suggests customers who may compare providers closely online, read detailed information and expect a smooth booking or quote process. It also means businesses compete for attention with many well-funded firms, which can raise the cost of reaching people.

Ask the provider how the plan reflects that audience. For consumer services, ask how pages would answer detailed questions before a customer calls. For firms selling to technology or aerospace employers, ask how inquiries would be qualified by company size and role, and how a longer decision process would be reported.

High local wages can also affect your own costs, including staff and service delivery. That makes it more important that the plan measures suitable customers and completed work rather than inquiry volume alone, since each unsuitable inquiry uses expensive time.

Washington contractor ads must show the registration number.

Washington's contractor registration law, RCW 18.27.100(3)(a), states that all advertising that shows the contractor's name or address shall show the contractor's current registration number. The statute exempts alphabetized directory listings showing only name, address and phone, vehicle and on-premise signs, and advertising by airwave transmission.

For a contractor, that brings websites, landing pages, social posts and many online ads into scope. Ask the provider who will add the number to each format, how it will handle short ad text, and who checks that the number is current before campaigns run.

The exemption for airwave transmission does not extend to most digital formats, so websites and online ads that show the contractor's name or address generally fall within the rule. Directory profiles that go beyond a simple name, address and phone listing may also need the number. If you are unsure whether a particular format is covered, check with the Washington Department of Labor and Industries rather than relying on the provider's assumption, and keep a record of what was checked and when.

Your questions, answered

Who is the best marketing provider in Seattle?

The right choice depends on the service, scope and working arrangement your business needs. Compare evidence, ownership, relevant expertise and the way each provider will measure suitable outcomes. This guide does not present an unverified ranking of agencies.

How can we test whether a provider understands this market?

Ask which customer journey the proposal assumes and how actual attendance or serviceability will be reviewed. An impression from somewhere in the region does not establish a practical local opportunity.

How should a Seattle business define its service area?

Use travel time rather than distance. WSDOT lists several tolled crossings in the area and Washington State Ferries carried more than 20.1 million riders in 2025. Ask the provider how bridges, tolls and ferries affect which inquiries are practical for you.

Is the Puget Sound region one market?

Not necessarily. PSRC reports that King County grew fastest in the region in 2025 and that Seattle passed 800,000 residents. Ask the provider to report Seattle, King County and the other counties separately before expanding.

Do Washington contractors need a registration number in their ads?

RCW 18.27.100(3)(a) requires all advertising that shows the contractor's name or address to show the current registration number, with some exemptions such as airwave transmission. Ask the provider how it will check the number in every format.
