What to know
- Define your catchment by LGAs and travel routes, not by the word Sydney.
- Factor toll roads and harbour or river crossings into how far your team will travel.
- Check whether your customers speak Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese or Vietnamese at home.
- Write separately for apartment residents, renters and house owners where the decision differs.
- Ask for a written test plan that names the suburbs and outcomes it will cover.

Define the local problem before requesting proposals.
The City of Sydney survey reports separately on ten village areas and economic precincts. It covers businesses and employment within the City local government area. Its 2022 data identified professional and business services as the largest category by establishment count.
Ask which geography the provider means by Sydney and how the proposed page answers the chosen audience’s practical questions. Keep inner-city evidence distinct from a wider service-area assumption.
Local reference: City of Sydney floor space and employment survey. The survey speaks only to the City of Sydney LGA and its survey year. What it means for marketing decisions is our reading, not the City's.
Separate the City of Sydney from the wider metropolitan audience.
Imagine a dental practice near workplaces in Sydney. It may want to understand whether suitable enquiries come from nearby workers, residents or people travelling for a particular service. Those are hypotheses to test against appointment fit and actual outcomes. A broad metropolitan label alone does not answer which group the practice should prioritize.
Ask whether a Sydney campaign targets inner-city workers, local residents or the wider metropolitan market. A dental practice may need different messaging for nearby workers and residents. Legal and professional firms should qualify matter type or business needs before optimizing for enquiry volume.
Two provider examples to compare.
These examples illustrate the different scopes you may encounter. We reviewed the providers’ own service descriptions on 8 October 2026. The questions in the final column are ours. Inclusion is not a ranking, endorsement or verification of client results.
| Provider | What its website describes | Question for your proposal |
|---|---|---|
| PayPerClick | Describes a Sydney agency spanning paid media, SEO, AI search, creative, website development and conversion tracking. | Ask what is included in measurement setup and how the programme will distinguish an enquiry from a qualified opportunity. |
| Efficient Media | Describes a Surry Hills agency covering paid advertising, organic search and content strategy for Australia and New Zealand. | Ask how local campaign decisions and reporting will stay specific to your Sydney service area. |
For a Sydney business, ask how the provider chooses between paid media, organic work and changes to the enquiry journey. The presence of several channels in a service menu does not explain which one deserves your first investment.
Sydney is 33 council areas and a toll network, not one market.
The NSW Government's Sydney Plan covers 33 local government areas and expects the region to be home to more than 6.6 million people by 2046. It replaced the 2018 Greater Sydney Region Plan and five district plans. Transport for NSW describes 160 kilometres of privately operated tolled motorways across Sydney's road network.
Those numbers explain why a campaign aimed at Sydney as a whole often reaches people a business cannot serve well. A tradie based in the Hills district and a practice in the eastern suburbs face very different travel times, tolls and crossings to reach the same customer. For a clinic, the question runs the other way: how far a patient is willing to travel, and whether a toll or a harbour crossing sits between them and the front door.
Ask each provider to draw the proposed service area as a list of LGAs or suburbs, with the travel reasoning behind it. Then ask how the location targeting, the pages and the reporting will match that list, so you can see enquiries by area and drop suburbs that produce work you cannot deliver profitably.
Many Sydney households use a language other than English.
In the 2021 Census, 57.3 per cent of Greater Sydney residents used only English at home. The most common other languages were Mandarin (5.0 per cent), Arabic (4.2 per cent), Cantonese (2.8 per cent), Vietnamese (2.2 per cent) and Hindi (1.5 per cent).
Many of these residents also use English, so translation is not automatically the right investment. The more useful questions are whether your team can serve customers in another language, and whether your prospective customers search or compare providers in it. If staff speak Arabic or Mandarin, stating that clearly on the relevant service page may do more than translating the whole site. Languages also concentrate differently by suburb, so check the QuickStats for your own area rather than relying on metropolitan figures.
Ask each provider who writes and checks any in-language copy, how in-language enquiries are routed to someone who can answer, and how results will be reported separately from English-language enquiries. Translated health or financial advertising still has to meet the same obligations as the English version.
Apartments and renting change who makes the decision.
Across Greater Sydney's occupied private dwellings in 2021, 30.7 per cent were flats or apartments and 12.8 per cent were semi-detached, terrace or townhouses, with separate houses at 55.8 per cent. Renting was the most common tenure at 35.9 per cent, ahead of owning with a mortgage at 33.3 per cent.
For trades and home services, that mix matters. The person who searches may be a tenant, while the person who approves and pays is a landlord, a property manager or a strata committee. Access, parking and building rules also affect how a job is quoted. For a clinic in an apartment-dense suburb, walking routes and nearby public transport may deserve more space on the page than parking.
Ask whether the proposed enquiry form captures property type and who approves the work, and whether the reporting will separate owner-occupier, landlord and strata enquiries. A provider that treats every Sydney household as a homeowner with a driveway is likely to misjudge both the message and the lead quality. The same applies in reverse for businesses that only serve houses.
Taking these Sydney questions into a proposal meeting.

Treat this page as a method and a set of Sydney questions rather than a league table of agencies. Your questions, answered
Who is the best marketing provider in Sydney?
That depends on where in Sydney you work, which customers you want and how the provider measures suitable enquiries. A provider suited to an inner-city practice may not suit a tradie covering western Sydney. We do not rank agencies on this page.
How can we test whether a provider understands this market?
Give the provider your suburb list and ask which of Sydney's 33 council areas it would include in a first test, and why. Ask how tolls, travel time and the languages spoken in those areas would change the pages and targeting.
Should our Sydney website be translated?
Not by default. In the 2021 Census, 57.3 per cent of Greater Sydney residents used only English at home, and Mandarin and Arabic were the most common other languages. If your team can serve customers in one of those languages, a dedicated page or clear statement may be a sensible test before a full translation.
Does a Sydney campaign need to cover the whole metropolitan area?
Rarely. The region covers 33 local government areas and 160 kilometres of tolled motorways, so travel cost and time vary widely. Most local businesses do better starting with the suburbs they can reach reliably, then widening the area once enquiries convert into work.
How do apartment buildings affect enquiries for trades?
In apartments, the person enquiring may not be the person who approves the job. A landlord, agent or strata committee may need to sign off, and building access rules affect quoting. Ask the provider to capture property type and decision-maker in the enquiry form.
