What to know
- Name the Metro Vancouver municipalities in scope rather than targeting Vancouver loosely.
- Decide whether Mandarin, Punjabi or Cantonese pages fit your customers and team.
- Include the Technical Safety BC licence number in regulated trade advertising.
- Use submarket context as a question, not a forecast.
- Report City of Vancouver results separately from Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey.

Define the local problem before requesting proposals.
Vancouver provides separate economic fact sheets for employment study areas including Central Broadway, Downtown East, Downtown West, Eastern Core, Grandview Boundary and South Vancouver. The city says the fact sheets were completed in 2020, mainly using 2016 Census data.
Ask how City of Vancouver demand will be distinguished from Surrey and the wider metropolitan market. Require dates and geographic scope beside any research used to justify the plan.

Use submarket context as a question, not a forecast.
Consider a clinic choosing which services to promote around its Vancouver location. Older employment-area information may help identify questions about the audience, but current inquiries and capacity must test the assumptions. The page should explain the actual service and access rather than convert historical city data into a present-day demand claim.
Use submarket boundaries as a research prompt, then validate current demand with campaign and customer evidence. Dental and HVAC services need different catchments and conversion definitions. Keep City of Vancouver, Surrey and the wider metropolitan market distinct in claims and reporting.
Two provider examples to compare.
These examples illustrate the different scopes you may encounter. We reviewed the providers’ own service descriptions on 8 October 2026. The questions in the final column are ours. Inclusion is not a ranking, endorsement or verification of client results.
| Provider | What its website describes | Question for your proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Major Tom | Lists Vancouver and Toronto among its locations, with services spanning marketing, development, creative and strategy. | Ask how a broader strategy and development engagement fits the scale and acquisition priorities of your business. |
| Jelly Digital Marketing & PR | Describes Vancouver-area marketing through PR, social media and digital advertising, with SEO, video and email also listed. | Ask how awareness and publicity activity will be connected with inquiries if acquisition is the main objective. |
A Vancouver organisation should distinguish strategic development and acquisition work from publicity and brand amplification. Both can have a role, but the proposal should explain which problem is being addressed and how its contribution will be evaluated.
Define which Metro Vancouver municipalities are in scope.
Metro Vancouver describes itself as a federation of 21 municipalities, one electoral area and one treaty First Nation, delivering regional water, wastewater and solid waste services and planning for urban growth across the region of the same name.
Searchers often say Vancouver when they mean the region, and broad location settings will follow that loose usage. A business in Kitsilano and one in Surrey can both appear to be in Vancouver to someone several municipalities away. For appointment-based services, the realistic catchment may be one or two municipalities. For trades with vans, it may follow bridge and highway access rather than municipal boundaries, because the North Shore, Richmond and communities south of the Fraser are all separated from the city by water crossings.
Ask the provider to list the municipalities and neighbourhoods it plans to target, explain why each is included and report results by municipality. A proposal that simply targets Vancouver with a wide radius leaves you unable to see which parts of the region produce suitable customers and which only produce travel. It also makes expansion decisions harder, because there is no clean baseline for each area.
Decide which languages your Vancouver pages need.
Statistics Canada's 2021 Census infographic on languages reports that among people in the Vancouver large urban centre who mainly spoke a non-official language at home, 21% spoke Mandarin, 19% Punjabi, 18% Cantonese and 6% Korean.
Those communities are unlikely to be spread evenly across the region, so the language decision belongs with the catchment decision above. A Richmond clinic, a Surrey home-services company and a West End salon could reach quite different conclusions from the same regional figures. The more practical test is whether your existing customers use the language and whether your team can respond in it.
Ask the provider how it would decide whether to build Chinese or Punjabi pages, whether Traditional or Simplified Chinese characters suit your audience, who writes and reviews translations, and whether ads will match the landing page. Ask for inquiries to be tagged by language so the decision can be revisited after a few months of real data. Translation quality matters here: a page that reads like a machine translation can undermine trust with exactly the customers it is meant to reach.
Show licence numbers for regulated trades.
Technical Safety BC states that licensed contractors in electrical, gas, elevating devices, and boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration are required by the Safety Standards General Regulation to add their Technical Safety BC licence number to all digital and print advertising. It also lists the City of Vancouver among the local governments that issue their own electrical or gas permits and carry out their own assessments.
For an electrician, gas fitter or refrigeration contractor, every ad, landing page and directory listing a provider produces is covered by that rule. Because permits inside the City of Vancouver are handled locally while much of the surrounding region falls under Technical Safety BC, page copy that explains the permit process should not assume one system applies everywhere.
Ask how the licence number will be built into ad templates and pages, who checks new creative before it runs, and how service pages for different municipalities will describe permits accurately. Ask as well whether the provider will audit existing listings and older pages that may lack the number, since those continue to appear in search long after a campaign ends. Unregulated businesses can apply the same thinking to any credential they mention.
A last word for Vancouver comparisons.
This guide offers Vancouver questions and a way to compare proposals; it is not an independent ranking of agencies. For the general steps on scope, reporting and contract terms, see our guide to choosing a marketing agency after a bad experience. Pulse Labs competes for this work and stands to gain if you choose us, which is a good reason to test our proposal against the same municipality, language and licensing questions.
Your questions, answered
Who is the best marketing provider in Vancouver?
The right choice depends on the service, scope and working arrangement your business needs. Compare evidence, ownership, relevant expertise and the way each provider will measure suitable outcomes. This guide does not present an unverified ranking of agencies.
How can we test whether a provider understands this market?
Ask how City of Vancouver demand will be distinguished from Surrey and the wider metropolitan market. Require dates and geographic scope beside any research used to justify the plan.
Should we target all of Metro Vancouver?
Usually not at first. Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, one electoral area and one treaty First Nation, and travel across the region's water crossings varies widely. Start with the municipalities you can serve well and expand when reporting supports it.
Which languages are most common at home in the Vancouver area?
Statistics Canada reports that among Vancouver residents who mainly spoke a non-official language at home in 2021, Mandarin, Punjabi and Cantonese were the largest groups. Whether your pages need them depends on your customers and your team's ability to respond.
Do BC electrical and gas contractors need their licence number in ads?
Technical Safety BC says licensed contractors in electrical, gas, elevating devices, and boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration must add their licence number to all digital and print advertising. Ask your provider how it will apply this consistently across every asset.
